Disgorged in October 2017 the oak-fermented wine shows a golden-reddish apricot color and opens with a very delicate, floral and herbal yet intense and vinous bouquet of red fruits, with warm, dry earth and spices and just a hint of oak. Bone dry (of course), fresh and elegant on the palate, this is an impressively delicate and filigreed Champagne to be enjoyed as a still wine rather than a fizz. The finish is long, clear, dry and well-structured (even with fine tannins) and reveals discreet salinity. In fact, Fidèle drinks like a Burgundy-inspired Coteaux Champenois with very fine but not effervescent bubbles, persistent lemon juice and a touch of oaky flavors. Don't use a flute to enjoy this young, gastronomic wine; instead, use a wine glass or one of the rounder, more voluminous Champagne glasses like the Lehmann Jamesse (which stresses the finesse rather than the vinous character). Don't serve the Fidèle too fresh, either, but if you must, wait a bit and don't worry if the wine is suddenly 12 or even 14 degrees Celsius—it's still delicious and even more vinous then! Each subsequent generation helped lay a foundation for a successful domaine with the most recent patriarch, Michel Gonet, enlarging the cellars in Avize and refocusing their winemaking in the 1970s. The total holdings are around 40 hectares, consisting mostly of Chardonnay on the Côte des Blancs. The palate is bright and has lightness, but this is rounder and less profound than pure Chardonnay from a storied grand cru would suggest. Champagne of mind-bending complexity, the 2013 possesses tremendous mid-palate intensity and power from the very first taste. Lemon confit, dried flowers, mint and a touch of brioche appear first, followed by light tropical accents that add an exotic flair. Imagine the sizzling energy of the 2008 and the persistence of 2004, with more mid-palate richness and riper fruit. Two-thousand thirteen was a cool, late ripening year. Harvest started at the beginning of October under sunny, dry days and cool nights, conditions that have not been seen since then. Readers will find a spectacular, modern Salon endowed with tremendous depth and very little of the youthful austerity that once defined Champagnes from cooler years here. He arrived with the desire to further enhance his family’s terroirs and showcase the richness of the Vallée du Petit Morin. To achieve this, he immediately began to vinify all the parcels separately to better understand the diversity of his terroir and isolate the best parcels, which gave birth to the parcel-based range and the two Coteaux Champenois, in addition to the traditional range already established by his family. Between 2014-2018 has been the period for Adrien to experiment. (In each vintage, the Échelle des Crus system, or ladder of growths, operates on a percentile basis to fix grape prices of each cru, or delimited vineyard area in the Champagne appellation; Pol Roger’s vineyards, therefore, rank close to the highest quality possible among the Grande Marque Champagne houses).

Prior to final blending each lot is aged on its own, separated by village, vineyard, grower and grape variety. Côte des Bar, located about an hour north of Chablis in the Aube department of France, is the transition point between Champagne and Burgundy. It was part of Burgundy for centuries until the French Revolution. This cultural association still forms the basis for the region’s winemaking philosophy, as well as its traditions and gastronomic identity.

As a condition of Thibaud’s succession to the helm of the family business, he is only interested in pursuing wines of exceptional purity and character, without makeup or boundaries. His mission is to make the best, most delicious, and joyous wines possible from the geographically- and biologically-diverse Côte des Bar region. This statement may seem simple on the surface. Yet, it is a sentiment that is exceedingly difficult to attain, given the reality of the variable and often harsh climate of northern France. It takes ingenuity, dedication, and talent to bring ideals such as these to life. Thibaud’s vision is clearly defined and focussed on the clear transmission of the energy and singularity of his environment while having a damn good time along the way! This vision makes his project one of the most exciting and original in the region and it aligns perfectly with the values of De Maison Selections. We are honored to be the exclusive stewards of the Champagne Brocard Pierre in the US.

The Brocard family are descendants of the native Irish Kennedy family, who settled in Champagne in the 11th century. Thibaud Brocard’s great-great-grandfather George Brocard was the vigneron who founded the family Champagne business in 1932 with their vineyards in the Vallée de l’Ource. George was followed by Emile Brocard, Henri Brocard, and then Pierre Brocard, Thibaud’s father, for whom the company is currently named. In 2012, after spending five years apprenticing with some of the most respected names in Burgundy, Thibaud became the fifth generation of the Brocard family to take over the domaine and its 6.5-hectare vineyards. This developmental period formed the basis for the philosophy that Thibaud now applies to his family domaine. He produces mostly vintage champagnes from single-grape varieties (chardonnay, pinot noir, with a bit of pinot meunier), with each of his 11 parcels vinified separately. Although he produces more Blanc de Blancs, he has a real passion for pinot noir and his Blanc de Noirs, a complex cuvée that inspires him enormously.

Grapes are manually harvested and gently pressed in a vertical Coquard press. Drinkers accustomed to Laurent-Perrier's usual delicacy and brightness will still find it in this 50:50 split of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but the year's up-front firmness plays clearly through bittersweet citrus, yellow apple and pithy, peppery grip, the fruit headed towards golden and tropical nuances rather than classical citrus and gentle red fruits. The body remains fairly compact rather than heavy or viscous, though, as most 2015s do.
