Vajra - Barolo 'Albe' 2021

The Vajra family has farmed Bricco delle Viole, the highest cru in Comune di Barolo, since the 1880s. At the young age of fifteen, Aldo Vajra embraced the dream to revive his family legacy. Displaying a vision and commitment belying his young age he took over the estate in 1968, turning a new page. Aldo soon acquired the first organic certification of the region (1971), created private biotype selections (selezioni massali) of Nebbiolo and Dolcetto, pioneered the renaissance of Freisa, a noble yet forgotten local grape (1980) and the cultivation of Rhine Riesling in Piemonte (1985).

Today, the family has 40 Ha under vine. The estate is steeped in tradition. Barolos are macerated for 20 to 30 days depending on the vintage. Wines are typically matured in large neutral Slavonian casks. The holdings in Bricco delle Viole are the prized vineyards of the estate, planted in 1949 by Aldo’s grandfather. It’s a very fresh terroir with open exposure and breezy conditions. Holdings in Barolo commune are: Fossati, Coste de Vergne and La Volta. Recently acquired vineyards in the commune of Sino (just outside Barolo DOCG, next to Serralunga) make a gorgeous Langhe Nebbiolo.

High elevation vineyards are a unique factor to Vajra wines, allowing them to express finesse and remarkable complexity over simple power. Attention to detail and humility toward nature, uncompromised efforts and humanity, these are the ideals of the Vajra family: Aldo and Milena, now joined by their children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro, and by an amazing team of young professionals. Giovanni’s son, Giuseppe, built Massolino’s first wine cellar, extended the estate into the best soils, and in 1934 founded the Consortium for the Defence of Barolo and Barbaresco. Three of Giovanni’s children later followed in his footsteps, expanding the estate with the purchase of cru vineyards which are authentic jewels: Margheria, Parafada, and Vigna Rionda. In the 1990s, Franco and Roberto, both oenologists, joined the family estate. Their work condenses the experience of an entire family and the ambition of a new generation, determined to make an important contribution to the innovation of oenological and agronomical techniques and to the image of the estate in Italy and abroad. If Monvigliero is recognised for its particular elegance, the interpretation at GB Burlotto adds depth and consistency to it. The harvest, which in Monvigliero is rather early, 'has been brought forward almost one month in 2017,' according to Alessandria. 'We finished picking the Nebbiolo on 31 September.' In this vintage he preferred selected yeast over indigenous yeast due to the heat and the potential alcohol. He fermented the wine in Slavonian oak vessels without destemming and let the malolactic conversion occur spontaneously, still in oak. It has a crystalline purity on the nose of peony, orange peel and red berries, embellished with cinnamon and rhubarb flavoured boiled sweets. This whole-cluster wine is elegant from all sides no matter how you approach it. To the bouquet, it offers smooth berry and spice, with lots of blue flower, dried lavender and lilac. A second aromatic layer centers on dry stone, limestone and some crushed white pepper. To the palate, it shows fine but tight tannins that are still nervous, like a closed fist. What I find most interesting about this warm-vintage expression from Monvigliero is that although the floral imprint is intact, the bouquet is broad enough to make room for spice, cherry and grilled herb. The Marchesi had no children and following the death of the couple, the Marchesi di Barolo dynasty was left without an heir. Giacomo was understandably proud of their local specialty and made it his life’s mission to create a wine that could compete with the world’s finest. Believing in this grape’s inherent potential for greatness, Giacomo ventured to produce a “Super Barbera”, vinifying the grapes into a quality wine and maturing it subsequently in French barriques, a practice unknown to most at that time. He succeeded three times over, first with Bricco dell’Uccellone, the flagship wine of the company, which has now become one of the world’s famous Italian wines, with verticals of more than a dozen vintages frequently appearing on fine restaurant wine lists. Soon after were added “Bricco della Bigotta” a complementary single-vineyard Barbera, along with “Ai Suma”, a then-unprecedented late harvest of Barbera, which has been produced only in the most suitable years since 1989.

Rafaella and Giuseppe Bologna (named for his ancestor), both oenologists, are the third “Braida” generation and are united by Giacomo's initial dream to elevate the Barbera grape into a noble status which is often reserved only for international varieties. Braida produces high quality wines through the selection of suitable sites and use of state-of-the-art winemaking and bottling techniques, including the practice of sustainable viticulture and production. The winery produces 600,000 bottles per year. The vineyards lie in beautiful hills with south-eastern exposure from 150m to 500m above sea level. The fermentations are in cask and the macerations have gone from around thirty days to, on average, 60-90 days. The aging regimen depends a bit on the cru and vintage but goes from 2-3 years to sometimes 8-10 and as much as 15-16 years for the Riserva. Luca has also switched all of their oak to the highest quality French oak 10cm thick – twice the thickness of a standard cask. These casks allow for a very slow micro-oxygenation which adds to the elegance of the finished wines.

Fermentation lasts ten days in large wood casks. They ferment with a pied de cuvee made from their indigenous yeasts. They then use the technique of submerged cap -- which can last 70-90 days. The wine is then aged in large neutral French botti. The oak Luca uses is never toasted but instead made by using hot steam instead of flame. The wine is normally aged for five years in wood before release.

“The 2019 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is one of the most profoundly riveting, beautiful wines I have ever tasted here. Best from 2028 through 2047.” - 98 Points, Wine Spectator

“The Roagna 2019 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti comes from a 1.5-hectare plot with vines planted in 1937. Part of the vineyard is on its original roots, and some of the ungrafted vines were reproduced by using the shoots of a mother vine buried underground, thus creating a new plant. The site tends to be among the last to harvest in October. This is an incredible expression of Nebbiolo, fluid and luminous. It changes constantly with delicate swirls. However, you also feel the power and intensity of a concentrated vintage. The bouquet opens to a hint of something botanical with flowers and fresh mint that give enormous vertical lift to the wine. Luca Roagna tells me that wild mint does in fact grow throughout the vineyard, and when he drives his tractor through the rows, he is reminded of an exotic mojito cocktail.” - 98 Points, Wine Advocate

Producer: Roagna

Country: Italy

Region: Piedmont

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Appellation: Barolo

Vintage: 2019

Size: 750ml

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0349/2239/7832/files/Photoroom_20260302_122349-Photoroom.jpg?v=1772482973
giovanni-rosso-ester-canale-barolo-vigna-rionda-2021
Giovanni Rosso Ester Canale - Barolo 'Vigna Rionda' 2021

Following the death of Tommasino Canale, Davide Rosso decided to replace a large part of the old vines that became by that time "exhausted" (about 0.80 hectares) preserving the part of the vineyard planted in 1946 (over 0.40 hectares). The beginning of their family history is lost in time and Luigi never precisely knew whether his ancestors gave their name to the place or took their name from it. It was thanks to Fiorina’s love and encouragement that the two decided to stop selling their family’s grapes to cooperatives and to start producing their own estate wines.

The Baudanas and the Vairas (of G.D. The sympathy and human bond that was established over those many hours led the Vaira family to suggest they could become the ‘guardians’ of Luigi and Fiorina’s history rather than just taking over their land. This is why the old cellar is still operating today, to vinify and age the Baudana Barolos. The Baudana name lives on through each bottle.

As of the 2009 vintage, the Vaira family has been at the helm of Baudana’s mere 4.1 hectares—2.6 of which are Barolo, 1.5 of which are Langhe Bianco. Through impeccable farming (always organic, with certification as of the 2019 vintage), keen interpretation of vintage, and a gentle, slow, traditional approach in the tiny cellar (open-top fermentations, long cappello sommerso macerations), the Vairas are able to highlight the nuances of the Baudana and Cerretta crus, which despite being adjacent to one another, can offer fascinating differences in the glass.

Luigi Baudana is a true garagiste production, one of the most limited in the entire Barolo region, and expresses the austere, intense, and charming character of Serralunga d’Alba.

In the history of Barolo, before the prevalence of single-cru bottlings, it was more common to blend fruit from sites of differing exposure, altitude, and soil type in order to obtain a more expressive and balanced wine. Baudana's Barolo Serralunga combines fruit from the younger vines (planted 1990) of the Cerretta and Baudana crus and, more recently, adds fruit from a small parcel in the cru of Costabella, just next to Baudana. Founded in 1900 by a Venetian dreamer, Scarpa bloomed under Mario Pesce post-WWII, turning heads with elegant, age-worthy reds. Today, Scarpa’s style is as classic as a cashmere coat: slow fermentations, giant oak casks (botti grandi), and a library of vintage Barbera that dates back decades. At the heart of it all is La Bogliona, the flagship Barbera d’Asti that ages like a Barolo and drinks like royalty. But don’t stop there—Scarpa crafts Barolo and Barbaresco too, from vineyards in top crus like Monvigliero and Roncaglie, despite not being based in the Langhe. A revivalist at heart, Scarpa also brought back its early-1900s vermouth line, now a benchmark in the Vermouth di Torino DOC. And while the wines are patient, the people are passionate—led by winemaker Silvio Trinchero, whose respect for tradition is only rivaled by his curiosity for lesser-known grapes like Ruchè and Pelaverga. After completing studies in management and biology, and fresh off an inspiring trip to Burgundy where she truly began forming her palate, Giulia returned to La Morra motivated to learn all the secrets to making fine wine in her native Piemonte. She started small, releasing microcuvées under her own label, before finally taking over the totality of vineyard management and production in 2014.

In the heart of the Serradenari cru of La Morra—the highest point in the Barolo zone, with vineyards culminating at 536 meters above sea level—Giulia passionately pursues her goal of crafting Barolo with a Burgundian sensibility. In fact, she even inherited small parcels of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero that her father planted on the estate’s cooler, north-facing sites, allowing her to pay tribute to the great wines of the Côte d’Or through the lens of Piemontese soil.

But Nebbiolo reigns in these parts, and Serradenari yields a Barolo of regal pedigree. The elevation, coupled with a complex mosaic of soils unique to this part of the Langhe, sets the stage for Giulia to create Barolos marrying delicate floral aromas and elegant fruit with a deep mineral foundation. With fine-grained, tightly knit tannins, her seductive wines charm in their youth but have the structure for serious bottle aging.

Upon Giulia’s arrival at the helm of the estate, the modest cellar was filled with small Burgundian barriques. After tasting all around the Langhe and learning from some of Barolo’s most distinguished growers, it quickly became clear that large casks were key to preserving Nebbiolo’s tension and mystical energy. With the goal of maximizing an honest expression of terroir, she has gradually replaced the smaller barrels with botti grandi. Her artisanal approach and espousal of traditional production methods extends to sustainable viticulture, eschewal of commercial yeasts and other additives, harvesting by hand, minimizing filtration, and long but gentle macerations in the cellar.

Barologirl, as she has become known, may still be the new kid on the block in La Morra, but tasting her wines reveals a fine touch and devout respect for tradition that already places her wines among the region’s classics.

Southwestern exposition at 520 meters (1,706 feet) above sea level.
