The history of Castiglion del Bosco dates back to 1100 A.D., amidst armed struggles, assaults and the inprint of great Sienese families, who settled and brought here the artistic genius of Pietro Lorenzetti, whose precious Annunciazione dei Santi (1345 A.D.) still adorns the hamlets tiny church. Farming was always a mainstay, as seen in the stables, olive groves, farmed land, and vineyards. In more recent history, Castiglion del Bosco became a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium in 1967.
Castiglion del Bosco entered its new chapter in 2003, when it was transformed to its current glory by Massimo and Chiara Ferragamo. Renewal of both the architecture and the winemaking processes commenced immediately and today the wines of Castiglion del Bosco receive worldwide recognition for their excellence. In 2022 Castiglion del Bosco begins a new chapter in its history with its transfer to an international family office, who ensures the continuous development of the entire estate with a spirit of continuity.
The entire vinification process is carried out in Castiglion del Bosco’s cellar, completely gravity-fed. The grapes are quality selected in the vineyards first, then the clusters travel to sorting tables where trained eyes make a further selection of the finest fruit. Fermentation is slow and natural, without the aid of added yeasts. Maceration continues beyond the end of fermentation allowing the release of noble components from the skins. Once completed, the wines are transferred to French oak in a spacious, climate-controlled cellar that is partially underground. Alcoholic fermentation lasts for 18 days at a constant temperature of 82.4°F. After malolactic fermentation, the Brunello is transferred to French oak barriques (20% new oak barrels, 80% first and second passage barriques). Aged for 24 months in french oak barrels and 24 months in bottle before being released in the fifth year after the harvest.
“This is really fine on the palate with wonderfully integrated tannins that give tension and focus. It’s medium-bodied with lovely berry, cherry, cedar and spice. Peaches and flower stems, too. Creamy texture. Extremely long and vivid. Structured, but showing beautiful drinkability with wonderful balance and form. One to drink or hold.” - 96 Points, James Suckling
“The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is a gorgeous interpretation of Northwest Montalcino terroir, with a darkly alluring bouquet of sage and rosemary giving way to crushed blackberries and stone dust. This opens with a lovely inner sweetness, perfectly balanced by crisp red fruits, mineral tones and a core of vibrant acidity. It finishes grippy and long yet surprisingly fresh, with a staining of primary concentration that lingers on and on. The 2019 was fermented using 70% whole cluster fruit.” - 95 Points, Vinous
“The nose has the delicacy of Mandarin orange blossoms, then tart Bing cherries and sweet wild strawberries, strewn over topsoil and sweet tobacco. The cherries are at perfect maturity on the palate, while that earth and smoke and spice lurk underneath.” - 94 Points, Wine Enthusiast
