Bruno Rocca - Barbaresco 'Rabajà' 2020

"In viniculture, there are no magic formulas, no premade recipes. There is only research, experience, and work. The reasoning you gain from daily work in close contact with the vines helps you construct your own idea of agriculture and wine." - Francesco Rocca

"Francesco Rocca is one of the most thoughtful young growers in Barbaresco. That shows in wines that are increasingly nuanced. The 2020 and 2021 vintages are both strong. I find the 2020s a bit more open, while the 2021s show quite a bit of reserve. The wines see 35-40 days on the skins, very much on the long side. Aging is about 16 months in cask, a bit less than in some recent years. The Riservas see one more week on the skins, with submerged cap maceration, and three additional months in cask. In 2020, the Nebbiolo harvest started on September 29 and ended on October 9, while in 2021 harvest started on October 8 and ended on the 13, which is late by today’s standards." - Antonio Galloni Vinous

"Opens up to intoxicating floral notes of pot pourri with dried cherry, savoury fruit and the freshness of redcurrant. Violet candy, liquorice and menthol in depth. The palate, despite a slightly warming finish, shows lifted, long acidity, very well integrated and allied to polished, elegant tannins. Restrained chocolate finish. Well known for its sternness, Bruno Rocca's Rabajà in 2020 is a great example of the rounder character of the vintage, without losing the ability to age of the greatest Barbaresco. The wine is fermented with its own yeasts and the malolactic fermentation occurred in big French oak vessels where the wine aged for 14-16 months." - 97 points, Decanter

"The 2020 Barbaresco Rabaja is translucent, potent and super-expressive. All the elements of this great site come through in a Barbaresco that is so alluring. Dark macerated cherry, tobacco, spice, mint and leather are some of the many notes that build into the potent finish." - 94 points, Antonio Galloni Vinous
