Clos Mogador was founded by visionary and leader of the Priorat revolution René Barbier. This is a must try for any serious Spanish wine aficionado. Located in Gratallops, in the heart of the Priorat hills, Clos Mogador is an intensely concentrated wine from a blend 45% Garnacha, 29% Cariñena, 16% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. This distinctive blend balances the power and massive structure typical of Priorat with an elegance and finesse that belies its aging potential. While the Clos Mogador will continue to improve for 10 years or more, it can be drunk young.
"Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon bide their time in carefully selected French oak barrels and only reappear when the moment is right, full of promise and hidden joy. This is by no means an industrial process. The few bottles of Clos Mogador are made with affection, attentively following in the ‘Grands Crus’ traditional artisan methods. Uncork a bottle of Clos Mogador, sit back, relax and enjoy the moment. Salut!" - René Barbier, Clos Mogador
Winemaker Notes: "The wine shows an opaque black-purple color and an intense, complex bouquet of ripe fruit, wild herbs, toasted bread, spices and smoke. The palate is massive and well balanced with a fat richness, a dense structure of velvety tannins and a powerful, lively acidity. Flavors of crystalized fruit, pepper, chocolate, coffee and a whole panoply of spices and herbs. On the long finish there are the unique mineral tones that make Priorat so special."
"The eponymous red 2021 Clos Mogador fermented with some 30% full clusters trying to give it more freshness (but without noticing the stems) with a long maceration (40 to 50 days) and (almost) no punching down, with less extraction. There's been a progressive change in the vineyard (they removed the south-facing Cabernet Sauvignon), and they increased Cariñena (around 30%), which in the future will be almost as much as Garnacha. It has aromatic complexity and a beautiful texture. It matured in 2,000-liter oak foudres and a small part in barrel and later in concrete. The wine has 14% alcohol and has the Priorat, Mogador and Mediterranean character (wet slate, graphite, aromatic herbs) with more elegance and freshness. The tannins are also a lot more elegant, and the wine comes through as very balanced. They produced 35,000 bottles of this. It was bottled in June 2023." - 98 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
