Henri Magnien - Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru 'Lavaux Saint-Jacques' 2021

IN STOCK

Founded in 1987, Domaine Henri Magnien is a small family estate, with 6 hectares, located in Gevrey-Chambertin. After working side by side with his father Francois, Charles took over the domaine in 2012 and has taken the wines to new heights. He is considered to be one of the rising stars in Burgundy.

They have been using an old clone which is called Pinot Noir Magnien, aged between 70 to 100 years old, bringing unusual power and spiciness to the wines. The domaine has many of the very best vineyards, including Lavaux St-Jacques, Les Cazetiers and Ruchottes-Chambertin. In the past five years, they have converted 70-80% of their vineyards to organic viticulture.

"Like the Champeaux, the nose is mildly toasty but it's not so oaky that the aromas of dark cherry, plum and newly turned earth can be appreciated. The medium-bodied and more powerful flavors also possess a really beguiling texture where the intensity does a slow build from the mid-palate to the youthfully austere finale that displays excellent length. This is textbook LSJ. Outstanding" - Allen Meadows,  Burghound

"The Gevrey Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru has a complex and outgoing bouquet with redcurrant, blackberry and raspberry fruit exploding from the glass. There is no holding back here vis-à-vis other cuvées. The palate is medium body with candied orange peel infusing the vivacious and slightly tart red fruit, but I appreciate the sharpness, almost flintiness towards the finish and the bitterness on the aftertaste that compels another sip. Excellent" - Neal Martin, Vinous
