In partnership with JB Maverick

Oregon has quickly established itself as one of the world’s most exciting winegrowing regions, and Nicolas-Jay stands out as one of its most compelling success stories. From the outset, Jean-Nicolas Méo and Jay Boberg set out to make wines that reflect both Burgundian precision and Oregon’s unique terroir.

The first three Nicolas-Jay vintages sold through quickly, confirming both the quality of the vineyards and the intent behind the project. Both owners remain closely involved, taking a hands-on role in decisions from vineyard selection through winemaking.

Please join us for a walkthrough tasting with Jay Boberg at Vinonueva, co-founder and visionary of Nicolas-Jay.

BACKGROUND

Nicolas-Jay is the Oregon collaboration between Jean-Nicolas Méo of Domaine Méo-Camuzet in Burgundy and Jay Boberg, longtime music executive and early advocate of Oregon Pinot Noir. Their partnership grew out of a decades-long friendship and a shared belief in Pinot Noir defined by elegance, balance, and a clear sense of place.

A visit to the Willamette Valley in 2011 prompted Jay to pursue his lifelong passion for wine. He approached Jean-Nicolas about starting a winery in Oregon—an idea Jean-Nicolas welcomed, drawn by the opportunity to work in a new region while applying more than 25 years of experience crafting wines from Burgundy’s Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards.

They began a focused exploration of the Willamette Valley, tasting extensively across dozens of vineyards. During a blind tasting of Pinot Noir from 20 different sites, one wine stood apart: fruit from Bishop Creek Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. The wine was distinctive, complex, and finely perfumed. Although they had not planned to purchase a vineyard, learning that Bishop Creek was for sale changed their direction. They acquired the site in 2014.

As stewards of the land, Nicolas-Jay is committed to expressing the pure character of each site. Bishop Creek Vineyard is organically farmed on ancient marine sedimentary soils and planted to own-rooted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Building on their experience with old-vine sites in Burgundy, those same principles now guide their work in Oregon.

Their winemaking facility is built into a hillside, allowing for gravity flow during harvest. The cellar includes temperature-controlled barrel rooms for extended élevage and a meticulous hand-sorting process modeled after Jean-Nicolas’ practices at Domaine Méo-Camuzet. These details support a restrained, precise approach in the cellar, focused on clarity rather than extraction.

In addition to Bishop Creek, Nicolas-Jay stewards a 53-acre estate in the Dundee Hills, planted on classic Jory volcanic soils. They also partner with a small group of respected vineyards across the North Willamette Valley, including Momtazi, Nysa, and Temperance Hill. From these sites, Jean-Nicolas Méo, Jay Boberg, and assistant winemaker Noah Roberts craft Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that balance Burgundian discipline with the natural elegance of Oregon.

The resulting wines are refined, expressive, and age-worthy—designed to evolve in the glass and in the cellar, while staying true to the character of their vineyards.
