Clos Figueras - Priorat Sweet 2023

IN STOCK

The history of Clos Figueras is closely linked to the renaissance of a once-forgotten wine region, the DOC (Denominacion de Origen Calificada) Priorat in the Catalonia region of Spain. The Clos Figueras project was born in 1997. Inspired by Rene Barbier, founder of the “Priorat revolution” and owner of the famous Clos Mogador, the couple Charlotte and Christopher Cannan decided to purchase 10 hectares of abandoned vineyards north of the village of Gratallops, nicknamed "Les Figueres". The property was named Clos Figueras after the two old fig trees once present on the property. Today, Clos Figueras oversees an 18-hectare vineyard with an exceptional terroir.

Clos Figueras owes its particular style to the famous llicorella, a rare soil made of black slate.

Along with old Carignan (Samso) vines, vines of Grenache (Garnatxa) and Syrah were replanted, as well as smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon, Mourvèdre and Viognier. Renowned for its wines, which express the typical characteristics of Priorat wines, Clos Figueras is one of the most emblematic estates of this prestigious appellation, now known throughout the world.

Fermentation is cool and expressly stopped before the end of the fermentation to preserved residual sugar.

Produced with overripe Garnacha grapes with the aspect of a red wine, purple colored and with a nose of caramelized apples and herbs. It's a bit weird to find a tannic young red with 92 grams of residual sugar, with 16% alcohol and a pH of 3.1. When and how to drink it remains a mystery to me. Only 667 half bottles were produced. It was bottled in January 2024 after a few months in stainless steel.
