Le Château became a Third Grand Cru Classé in 1855, at the time of the famous classification published for the Paris Universal Exhibition. It was acquired by the Bordeaux trading house Schröder & Schÿler in 1926, the Schÿlers being of Hanseatic origin. Today, Sophie, Nathalie and Yann Schÿler are at the helm of the estate, working with the best viticultural and oenological consultants to optimize the excellence of their wines.
The vineyard covers 37 hectares on Pyrenean gravel and sandy-gravel soils, and is planted with 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The wines are aged for 18 to 21 months in oak barrels, 33% of which are new.
The wines of Château Kirwan are known for their finesse and freshness, where purity of fruit rubs shoulders with precision and balance.
55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33 % Merlot, 7 % Cabernet-franc, 5 % Petit Verdot. 18 months in casks, 50% new.
“Almost more like a Pauillac in its expression of graphite and cassis, along with blackberry. The powerful, yet refined and racy tannins are a good sign for longer term ageing and although one can enjoy this today, it would be better to keep in your cellar for another three to five years for it to become more supple. Long finish.” - 94 Points, Decanter
"There’s fragrant charm here with purple flowers and a swathe of ripe, juicy dark berries. This has a firmish overall feel with sturdy tannins, driving ripe and fresh, red and dark berries long. The oak is very nicely played.” - 92 Points, James Suckling
