The Eguren family of Teso la Monja are one of D.O. Toro's most important pioneers, having cofounded Bodega Numanthia-Termes with Jorge Ordóñez in 1997. Numanthia was the first exhaustive fine wine project to resuscitate Toro since before phylloxera. Toro is one of Spain's most historic winemaking regions. Tempranillo originated in the Duero Valley, and many ampelographers believe that it originated in Toro, where it is known as Tinta de Toro. These ancient clones of Tempranillo were responsible for Toro being celebrated as Spain's finest winemaking region during the Middle Ages. Toro was also Spain's only region to completely resist phylloxera due to its sandy soils. Teso la Monja is the Eguren family's new interpretation of Toro, where they sought to produce a more refined and restrained expression of Toro by focusing on northern facing vineyard sites planted on clay soils covered in canto rodado.Practicing organic dry farmed viticulture with certain selective biodynamic practices. Almirez is sourced exclusively from estate vineyards trained primarily as head-trained goblet vines. Some of the younger sites are planted on high density trellises.

Victorino comes from estate vineyards located in the parajes of La Jara and El Palo (Toro), El Rosal and El Risco (Villabuena del Puente), and Valdefinjas. The vines were planted between 1920-1975. Practicing organic dry farmed viticulture with certain selective biodynamic practices. Victorino is sourced from old, head-trained goblet vines of Tinta de Toro that are all ungrafted and planted with old massal selections of Tinta de Toro. Aged for 20 months in new French barrique.

Dense purple in color, presents in the nose a great concentration of aromas of black fruit with brandy, spices and mineral nuances. On the palate it is well structured, powerful, very expressive, creamy, rich and aromatic with smooth tannins.

"The 2020 Victorino has a little less alcohol than its siblings, 14.58%, and a little more freshness and acidity. It was produced with grapes from 35 hectares of old vines in La Jara and El Palo (Toro), El Rosal and El Risco en Villabuena del Puente and in Valdefinjas. It matured in new French oak barrels for 20 months. The toasted aromas from the barrels are still quite noticeable, but it's not overpowering and the oak gives the wine spiciness and creaminess. This is textured and balanced, with a mellow mouthfeel and abundant, slightly dusty and chalky tannins. This is reminiscent of the 2018, a year with abundant rains and larger bunches." - 94 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"The 2020 Victorino, originating from Toro and aged for 20 months in oak barrels, boasts a dark garnet hue. Its aromas are rich with intense black fruit notes, complemented by thyme, bay leaf and cedar. The voluminous palate is sustained by fine-grained reactive tannins, leading to a long-lasting, flavorful finish dominated by black fruit notes. This is an ample yet fitted Toro red." - 94 points, Vinous
