Antoniolo is considered by many to be the most important reference-point estate in Gattinara, Alto Piemonte’s most well-known appellation.
San Francesco comes from 3.5 hectares of 60-year-old vines in volcanic soil. 100% Nebbiolo from the estate’s single vineyard ‘San Francesco’ cru at 390 meters above sea level. Fermentation in cement and aged 18 months in mostly used tonneaux, then 18 months in 25-35 hectoliter Slavonian and French oak casks.
“Antoniolo’s bottles contain the best of Northern Piedmont’s heritage. Hard-boned and only apparently lean, they can survive the decades while making all their greatness immediately obvious.” — Gambero Rosso
"The 2009 Gattinara San Francesco is drop-dead gorgeous. A layered, voluptuous, sexy Gattinara, the 2009 San Francesco is firing on all cylinders. Leather, smoke and licorice add complexity to the dark fruit in this deeply layered, expressive wine. The depth of color and fruit suggest the 2009 will drink well for years, but it is already fabulous." - 94 points, Antonio Galloni Vinous
