G.B. Burlotto - Barolo 2020

Giovan Battista Burlotto formally established this estate in 1850, and it was one of the very first Barolo estates to bottle its own wine. Most of the estate’s wines come from vineyards in the village of Verduno, and these wines share a gracefulness and aromatic profile that is unique in the world of Barolo. The estate remains devoted to traditional Langhe winemaking, with well-seasoned botti grandi used to age all the Barolos. Barolo fermentations use exceptionally long macerations, and the Barolo Monvigliero’s grapes are tread entirely by foot. Burlotto was a key champion of the local Pelaverga grape, and much of the credit for its modern resurgence. All harvesting is by hand, and viticulture respects the natural balance of the vineyards.

The bunches are de-stemmed and the must moved by gravity into open French oak vats where alcoholic fermentation takes place. During the maceration, delicate pumping over and punching down are carried out daily. 

Malolactic fermentation takes place in in large French oak barrels followed by subsequent maturation for a period of 20 to 33 months depending on the vintage. After bottling, normally carried out in the summer, the wine rests in the cellar for at least 9 months before being marketed.

To the palate, the wine shows a very tight and compact texture, tonic and polished, with lingering lavender bud, some grilled herb, sour cherry, tart flavors, glossy tannins and nice acidity. Medium-bodied and fresh, with delicate, sweet fruit floating through the palate, it has ultra-fine tannins, and a clean, long finish.
