Teso La Monja Toro - Victorino 2021

IN STOCK

The Eguren family of Teso la Monja are one of D.O. Toro's most important pioneers, having cofounded Bodega Numanthia-Termes with Jorge Ordóñez in 1997. Numanthia was the first exhaustive fine wine project to resuscitate Toro since before phylloxera. Toro is one of Spain's most historic winemaking regions. Tempranillo originated in the Duero Valley, and many ampelographers believe that it originated in Toro, where it is known as Tinta de Toro. These ancient clones of Tempranillo were responsible for Toro being celebrated as Spain's finest winemaking region during the Middle Ages. Toro was also Spain's only region to completely resist phylloxera due to its sandy soils. Teso la Monja is the Eguren family's new interpretation of Toro, where they sought to produce a more refined and restrained expression of Toro by focusing on northern facing vineyard sites planted on clay soils covered in canto rodado.Practicing organic dry farmed viticulture with certain selective biodynamic practices. Almirez is sourced exclusively from estate vineyards trained primarily as head-trained goblet vines. Some of the younger sites are planted on high density trellises.

Victorino comes from estate vineyards located in the parajes of La Jara and El Palo (Toro), El Rosal and El Risco (Villabuena del Puente), and Valdefinjas. The vines were planted between 1920-1975. Practicing organic dry farmed viticulture with certain selective biodynamic practices. Victorino is sourced from old, head-trained goblet vines of Tinta de Toro that are all ungrafted and planted with old massal selections of Tinta de Toro. Aged for 20 months in new French barrique.

“The 2021 Victorino is all Tinta de Toro from very old, head-trained fines and was raised entirely in new oak. Black and blue fruits, spicy oak, graphite, and a kiss of lead pencil all define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, with beautifully integrated oak, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. Its purity as well as overall balance are exceptional.” - 94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck

“Warm cherry, blueberry and fig flavors are accented by pretty notes of violet, anise, graphite and cocoa powder, all refreshed by citrus peel acidity. This well-knit red is lush and creamy, but dusty tannins provide supple definition, with hints of wild herbs, loamy earth, black olive and smoke lingering on the finish. Drink now through 2031.” - 92 Points, Wine Spectator
