In 2002, the year he set up Bodegas Juan Gil, Miguel Gil also co-founded one of the most ambitious quality wine projects in southern Spain, El Nido. With Australian winemaker Chris Ringland (ex-Rockford and producer of acclaimed old vine Barossa Shiraz) Miguel established a tiny winery next to Juan Gil to produce just 2,000 cases from the best low yielding plots in the area. Two award-laden and immaculately-crafted wines, Clio and El Nido, are made from 44 hectares of 65 year old Monastrell and 30 year old Cabernet Sauvignon.
The winery is in the Valle de la Aragona, Jumilla. The high altitude and long growing season give a freshness and brightness to the fruit and fine ripe tannins. The grapes are sourced from 12ha of Cabernet Sauvignon and 32ha of very old, low-yielding Monastrell. They are harvested in small baskets to prevent bruising, then undergo selection. Fermented and aged for 24 months in new French and American oak.
"The 2023 Clio is composed of 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon from Jumilla. It was aged for 23 months in French and American oak barrels. Recently bottled, the oak is at the forefront but will integrate. The wine opens with plum, soft herbal notes and blackberry. Intense with fruit complexity, the palate is creamy, flavorful and delicate in tannins, finishing with a touch of oak that will meld with time. Drink: 2025-2043.” - 93 Points, Vinous
