Château de Sales is located in the north-west of the Pomerol appellation. With 47.6 hectares (117 acres) under vine out of the 90 hectares (222 acres) that make up the property, it is the largest vineyard in the Pomerol appellation. Except for three hectares (7 acres) that were lost during the French Revolution, the property limits are the same as they were in 1578.
The majority of vines are Merlot (73%) which, combined with Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Cabernet Franc (12%), finds its full expression in a terroir of gravel and heat-retaining sand which also contains iron oxide. On average, planting density is 5,900 vines per hectare.
Château de Sales is aged for 12 months in oak barrels, 15%-20% new. The wine is bottles usually 18 months after harvest.
“Ripe, plummy nose with hints of baked cherries, iron and herbs. Medium body with juicy red fruit and a firm, medium-long finish. Still tight. Give it another two years in the bottle. Drink from 2027.” - 92 Points, James Suckling
“Gently steeped raspberry and black cherry fruit shows density and grip, with light anise, black tea and savory notes adding energy through the lightly toasted, slightly dusty finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2036. 9,000 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.” - 91 Points, Wine Spectator
“Red and black fruits, savory flowers, spice, and menthol notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Sales, a pure, seamless, very pretty, elegant wine from this team, a medium-bodied, round, supple, elegant Pomerol that will need to be drunk over the coming decade.” - 91 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
