In 1871, the property was acquired by the Nicolas family and today, Jean-Valmy Bertrand Nicolas represent the fifth generation to produce a great wine whose reputation has crossed borders.
The Château La Conseillante is planted on 12 hectares of vines on soils of grey clay and sandy gravel with a subsoil of red clay due to the presence of iron dross, conferring a unique singularity to the wines.
The grape varieties are 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet franc. The wines are aged for an average of 18 months in French oak barrels, 50 to 70% of which are new. 3% of production is aged in amphorae.
The estate produces a Second wine, Duo de La Conseillante, which offers another facet of this exceptional terroir.
The Château La Conseillante delivers quite exceptional wines, renowned for being silky, elegant and balanced in power, marked by a finesse and mineral touch found nowhere else.
Harvested, vinified and aged separately, they provide the precious raw material that will be skilfully brought together in the final blend, when the true nature of each individual terroir and the precision work performed in each task come beauti- fully into focus. Aged 18 months in 60-80% new French oak barrels.
“The 2010 La Conseillante has been spellbinding since I first tasted it from barrel. It has an intense nose with black plum, cedar and graphite. It is vibrant and compelling with scents of camphor intertwined. Wonderful delineation; there are layers of aromatic complexity. The palate is beautifully knit with a touch of black pepper and thyme filtering through the black fruit. It retains so much energy on the finish as it fans out with class and verve. Magnificent. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the Icons of Bordeaux dinner at Legacy Records in New York. 2024-2055.” - 98 Points, Vinous
"A brilliant effort from this property, known for the sheer elegance and finesse of its wines, the 2010 La Conseillante offers back-to-back monumental efforts, particularly given the remarkable 2009. This estate has been on a hot streak of late. The 2010 is a slightly bigger, richer wine, but without losing its floral, elegant mulberry, black raspberry and sweet kirsch notes. Combine those with some licorice, subtle new oak and a hint of forest floor, and the result is a medium to full-bodied, rich, complex wine that has striking aromatics and perfect balance in the mouth. Forget it for 3-5 years and drink it over the following 30. Drink 2016-2046." - 96 Points, Robert Parker
"Beautiful nose with cocoa powder, exotic flowers, candied violets and loads of dark berries. Great aromatic complexity. Amazing texture on palate with a superb precision and silky tannins. So beautifully composed showing already great harmony. Difficult to wait! Better in 2018." - 98 Points, James Suckling
