Following the death of Tommasino Canale, Davide Rosso decided to replace a large part of the old vines that became by that time "exhausted" (about 0.80 hectares) preserving the part of the vineyard planted in 1946 (over 0.40 hectares). From these seventy years old plants, characterized by very low yields, we obtain our Barolo Vigna Rionda; only those roots so deep can tell the story of this vineyard.
The replanting has been done at the beginning of 2011 by cloning the mass selection of the original vines. Immediately the grapes expressed an incredible potential, despite of their young age, merit of the unique characteristics of this plot. Here comes the desire to produce a great Langhe Nebbiolo able to represent, along with the wise Barolo VignaRionda, an authentic photograph of this mythical Cru.
This very limited series of bottles will be produced only in certain vintages, until when the young vines will have reached the right maturity crucial to become a pure breed Barolo
A must try for any Piemonte fan looking for translucent, elegant and refined expressions of Nebbiolo. Forget about the label, this a Langhe Nebbiolo in a class of its own.
“The 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Ester Canale Rosso is gorgeous. Dark and pliant, the 2021 has an air of mystery that is palpable. It’s a wine with myriad shades of dimension that emerge over time. Black cherry, plum, incense, leather and lavender open with some c oaxing. This young-vine Langhe Nebbiolo from Vignarionda is not ready yet to be Barolo, but it is far above most wines in its peer group.” - 94 Points, Vinous
“Fragrant and loaded with finesse, the 2021 Langhe Nebbiolo Canale Rosso is radiant and intense. It opens with heady aromas of dog rose, wild mint, forest floor and spice while the vibrant palate features wild raspberry, strawberry, star anise and a hint ol ive brine. Firm, fine- grained tannins provide support while bright acidity keeps it balanced. What a stunner. Made with the estate’s youngest vines in Vignarionda and showing its Serralunga pedigree, it needs a few more years to fully unwind and integrate.” - 95 Points, Kerin O’Keefe
“A Nebbiolo that shines for its concentration, it has a bark -like, fleshy character with dark violet and blood orange complexity. The attack is super-rich, tannins vibrant and grainy then polished on the finish, with lively integrated acidity and a sweet no te of smoky woodland. One of the best and, not by chance, one of the most expensive Langhe Nebbiolo bottlings. ‘It's a sort of Barolo bottled young,’ says winemaker Andrea Delpiano. Bottled in July 2023, it has been on the market since 1 January 2024. It ages for 12 months in 25-hectolitre barrels.” - 95 Points, Decanter
