Founded in 1973 by Sandro Fay, who starting from a small family-run wine producing business, decided to expand the estate’s activities; since 1998, Sandro has been flanked by his children Marco and Elena. The business area is 15 hectares.
Valtellina is the biggest mountain vineyard terraced area in Italy. The native grape variety grown here is Nebbiolo, locally called Chiavennasca. The vines are grown at an altitude between 350 and 900 metres. The vineyards extend over 15 hectares and traditionally, the wine estate is strongly linked to the Valgella sub-zone, where most of the production is concentrated. Valgella is the name of one of the five sub-zones of the Valtellina Superiore Docg denomination; it stretches over 137 hectares in the commune of Teglio. The name comes from “Valgel”, a dialect word describing the small streams that characterize the area.
Costa Bassa Fay is produced from Nebbiolo grapes (locally called Chiavennasca) coming from terraced vineyards that rise from the valley floor up to 450 m above sea level in the Valgella sub-area in the municipality of Teglio in Valtellina. Fresh, fruity, medium structure. The soil is Sandy (70%), silty (20%). The grapes are picked in the second half of October. Alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tank; malolactic fermentation and aging for 12 months in oak casks.
Beautiful aromatics of wild berries, rose and alpine herbs set the scene for this lovely wine, with luscious cherry fruit and sandy tannins giving way to a light balsamic herb character.
