Comando G - El Reventon 2021

IN STOCK

El Reventón comes from sandy granite soils with varying amounts of quartz and clay are the norm in the Sierra de Gredos, there are some vineyards on schist and slate soils as well. El Reventón, a 1-ha parcel of around 70-year-old Garnacha at 900 meters above sea level, is planted on just such a rare outcropping of slate. It stands in contrast with Comando G’s other wines as more wildly aromatic, darker, richer, and with a firmer structure. Broken into two sections by the crest of a hill, each parcel in exceptional vintages, such as 2016, is fermented, aged, and bottled separately.

Hand harvested, natural yeast fermentation in open vats, whole cluster, pigeage and aged for 16 months in 500L French oak barrels.

"The 2021 El Reventón is the one wine from the village of Cebreros on slate soils, and it has an herbal and peppery twist similar to the notes I found in the Las Iruelas from this very cold year. This has some more meaty notes, more iron, but no heat or Mediterranean grapes. It's a narrower, more mineral expression of El Reventón, very balanced with an unnoticeable 15% alcohol, which meant full development of aromas and flavors in the grapes that were infused into the wine. This has to be the most elegant and precise year of El Reventón to date. In this cold vintage, it's ethereal, a little wider but getting close to the style of Las Iruelas. It's a little less expressive on the nose than Iruelas, with a little more fruit. 2022 will be the last vintage for this wine, as they sold the vineyard to the Alejandro Vigil and Catena team from Mendoza, who vinified it for the first time in 2023. 1,759 bottles were filled in March 2023." - 97 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Superbly knit nose despite the pungent white pepper character here. Lots of fruit, too, with wild berries, roasted grapefruit, agave and stones. Really firm and ample on the palate with impressive length and a little more roundness, too. Drink now or hold." - 96 points, James Suckling
