Domaine des Comtes Lafon has been in the Lafon family since 1865. Dominique Lafon took over the domaine in 1985. It is comprised of approximately 14 hectares situated in the communes of Volnay, Monthélie, Chassagne-Montrachet, and of course, Meursault, where the domaine and its monopole vineyard Clos de la Barre are located.
All the vineyards are cultivated biodynamically and they proudly own every Premier Cru in Meursault. Dominique retired at the end of 2021, handing over the reigns to his daughter, Léa and nephew, Pierre, who as part of the fifth generation of winemakers in the Lafon family, will continue this domaine’s superstar reputation not only in Burgundy but throughout the world.
2.12 hectares owned entirely by the domaine, encircled by a wall Shallow clay soil above hard limestone Planting dates - 1950 (0.80 ha), 1975 (0.80 ha), 1999 & 2004 (0.50 ha) The terroir produces rich, mineral wines, with pronounced citrus aromas and marked acidity.
“Fine pale lemon colour. The bouquet offers precision in a mineral style of Meursault, but not massively demonstrative. Lemon infused minerals almost to the point of being severe, but there is clearly a significant volume of fruit still to emerge. I can see the Clos de la Barre growing in stature from here. Drink from 2028-2035.” - 94 Points, Jasper Morris
“Aromas of yellow orchard fruit, lemon oil, toasted almonds, white flowers and oatmeal introduce the 2022 Meursault Clos de la Barre, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and structured wine, with a fleshy core of fruit, lively acids and good grip on the finish. As ever, it's built for the cellar. The first produced under the direction of Léa and Pierre Lafon, the 2022 vintage has turned out very well at this address, delivering both quality and reasonable quantity, a welcome change after the vicissitudes of 2021. For now, no big changes are afoot, and Dominque Lafon continues to be a guiding presence—organic and biodynamic farming in the vineyards, barrel fermentation for whites, two winters' élevage on the lees for both colors, and bottling under Diam technical corks (since 2013) continue to be the order of the day. What's new this year are two attractive cuvées of Puligny-Montrachet, the fruit of a sharecropping agreement.” - 92 Points, Wine Advocate
“Smoky floral and essence of pear aromas are trimmed in discreet spice and citrus wisps. There is better mid-palate density to the vibrant and attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess slightly better depth and persistence on the firm, well-balanced and lightly austere finale. This seemingly always boxes above its weight and it has done so again in 2022.*Burghound Outstanding!” - 92 Points, Burghound
