François Buffet is flying under the radar and could very soon be among the top producers in Volnay. These represent the true essence of Pinot Noir from Burgundy.
François Buffet is an organically-farmed Volnay estate, producing fine-boned, aromatic reds in a classic Burgundian style. The first Buffet estate was established in 1692, and current owner and winemaker, Marc-Olivier Buffet represents the seventh generation of his family. The domaine has enviable holdings among Volnay’s best premiers crus, as well as plots in Pommard, Savigny and Pernand-Vergelesses. Buffet is a source of well-priced, classic Burgundy of great finesse and elegance.
Average vine age 50% 47 years and 50% 66 years.
The vinification is made the traditional way. It last between 2 and 3 weeks. The grapes are destemmed fully, partially or not at all depending on the “Cru” and the vintage. Then the wines are put in oak barrel for about 18 months (20% in new oak barrels).
The wines of Volnay have always fine tannins, which makes them supple with good aging potential. Beautiful red ruby color. The bouquet is well defined and very elegant with gracious rose petal notes. The palate is rounded on the entry with silky smooth tannins that are well melted into the wine. There is a velvety touch in the mouth surrounded by a fine acidity and a good grip. Some nice morello cherries and cherry stone notes on the finish.
This village wine is quite impressive. Only gets better with time in the glass. A textbook example of classic Volnay. Highly recommended for all those seeking red fruit driven Pinot's with a good dose of finesse.
