Domaine Henri Magnien - Corton Grand Cru 'Les Grandes Lolieres' 2022

IN STOCK

Charles Magnien is the twelfth generation at his family’s domaine in Gevrey Chambertin. They have six hectares of vines, mostly in Gevrey in some key parcels, Ruchottes, Lavaut Saint Jacques, Cazetiers, and Champeaux. The famous vineyards garner the attention, but equally as rich as the land is the old vines. In 1850, the family discovered a mutation of Pinot Noir, which was named after the family, Pinot Magnien. The Pinot Magnien is a part of the blend in their Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes cuvee where the oldest vines are 100 years-old. Charles took over from his father in 2009 and immediately invested his energy and efforts in the vineyards where he is working with a higher canopy. He is following organic agriculture, but will treat if necessary. Charles Magnien is the first in his family to bottle all of the wine that they grow and now with more than ten vintages under his belt, the Henri Magnien wines are quickly becoming recognized as some of the best in the village.

From a special 100 year-old vine triangle-shaped site at 400 meters elevation. Reddish-brown soil. Clay-limestone subsoil with gray limestone with silex throughout. Aged 12 months in French oak barrels (75% new oak and 25% barrels of one wine).

“Cool and airy aromas of high-toned red berry fruit enjoys additional breadth in the form of plum, earth and a touch of spice. There is impressive concentration and an abundance of sappy dry extract that coats the palate of the big-bodied flavors as well as buffers the firm tannic spine supporting the youthfully austere and beautifully long finish that also displays a touch of warmth.” - 93 Points, Burghound

“A full purple, heady at 13.8%, with a little new wood and an aspect of the nose where the oak is rather dominating, but no problem in the mouth with a weight of generous dark fruit covering the tannins behind. Good length as well. The nose should settle down and the finer qualities of this Corton assert themselves.” - 94 Points, Jasper Morris MW

“The 2022 Corton Les Grandes Lolières Grand Cru comes from a climat that is planted with white and red, though it is forbidden to write the name of the lieu-dit if it is Chardonnay. This offers attractive red cherry, wild strawberry and potpourri scents on the nose where you might incorrectly assume there are stems. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, a pinch of black pepper, and allspice. It’s quite concentrated on the finish if maybe missing the finesse that I discerned on the previous vintage. It's still a promising Corton, though.” - 92 Points, Vinous
