Domaine Henri Magnien - Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru 'Les Cazetiers' 2022

IN STOCK

Charles Magnien is the twelfth generation at his family’s domaine in Gevrey Chambertin. They have six hectares of vines, mostly in Gevrey in some key parcels, Ruchottes, Lavaut Saint Jacques, Cazetiers, and Champeaux. The famous vineyards garner the attention, but equally as rich as the land is the old vines. In 1850, the family discovered a mutation of Pinot Noir, which was named after the family, Pinot Magnien. The Pinot Magnien is a part of the blend in their Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes cuvee where the oldest vines are 100 years-old. Charles took over from his father in 2009 and immediately invested his energy and efforts in the vineyards where he is working with a higher canopy. He is following organic agriculture, but will treat if necessary. Charles Magnien is the first in his family to bottle all of the wine that they grow and now with more than ten vintages under his belt, the Henri Magnien wines are quickly becoming recognized as some of the best in the village.

From seven parcels which cover the four main soil types in Cazetiers: sandy marl, crinoidial limestone, Premeaux limestone, and marl with Ostrea Acuminata. The vines average 70 years-old and include the special Pinot Magnien.  Aged for twelve months in barrel, 50% new.

"Bright mid purple. Served after Ruchottes because there is clearly a greater volume of fruit here, fills the mouth well, more on the raspberry side, with a little fresh white pepper behind, and medium plus depth. Does it quite have the grip of a great Cazetiers? Certainly it is a very good one. Drink from 2030-2040. Tasted: November 2023.” - 95 Points, Jasper Morris MW

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has the ripest and most sensual of Magnien's cuvées on the nose, adorned with lush red cherry, raspberry and light fig scents. There's a soupçon of exoticism in situ. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, quite fleshy in the mouth with good grip and density. There is more horsepower even when contrasted against the Ruchottes-Chambertin. Lingers wonderfully on the finish. Excellent. Drink: 2027-2048. (Jan 2024)" - 95 Points, Vinous

"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers offers up pretty aromas of cherries and raspberries mingled with spices, peonies and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, it's charming and sensual, with excellent depth of fruit, supple tannins and a saline finish. (1/18/24)” - 94 Points, Wine Advocate
