Charles Magnien is the twelfth generation at his family’s domaine in Gevrey Chambertin. They have six hectares of vines, mostly in Gevrey in some key parcels, Ruchottes, Lavaut Saint Jacques, Cazetiers, and Champeaux. The famous vineyards garner the attention, but equally as rich as the land is the old vines. In 1850, the family discovered a mutation of Pinot Noir, which was named after the family, Pinot Magnien. The Pinot Magnien is a part of the blend in their Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes cuvee where the oldest vines are 100 years-old. Charles took over from his father in 2009 and immediately invested his energy and efforts in the vineyards where he is working with a higher canopy. He is following organic agriculture, but will treat if necessary. Charles Magnien is the first in his family to bottle all of the wine that they grow and now with more than ten vintages under his belt, the Henri Magnien wines are quickly becoming recognized as some of the best in the village.
A younger vineyard, 35 years-old, but charming and complex in its youth. Aged for twelves months in barrel, 50% new.
"The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champeaux 1er Cru has a glorious bouquet, very floral and well-defined with raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, wonderful definition and focus. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a pinch of white pepper, and much more backbone than Magnien's entry-level wines, with good persistency on the finish. Excellent. Drink: 2026-2042. (Jan 2024)” - 94 Points, Vinous
"Mid ruby purple. The bouquet hovers between raspberry and strawberry fruit, with some elegance. It bursts forward on the palate without exceeding its bounds, while the structure has a slightly greater presence than for Charles Magnien’s village wines, suited to longer ageing. A clean red fruit finish. Charles has to keep a watch here to avoid the grapes getting wrinkled. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted: November 2023." - 94 Points, Jasper Morris MW
"(from a .25 ha parcel of <35-year-old vines). Subtle though not invisible oak influence is present on the more sauvage-suffused aromas of forest floor, earth and ripe dark currant. The supple, delicious and vibrant middleweight flavors possess a caressing mid-palate that contrasts somewhat with the firm, mildly austere and lightly stony finale. Good quality here. Drink: 2030+.
