HdV is a venture between the Hyde Family of Napa Valley and the de Villaine Family of Burgundy (Domaine de la Romanée-Conti). The families, related by marriage, share long histories in French and Californian winemaking. HdV have brought together the knowledge and experience for the purpose of creating single vineyard wines from the slopes of Hyde Vineyards.
The HdV Chardonnay is the flagship wine, showcasing the legendary terroir of Hyde Vineyard. Two selections of mature Hyde Chardonnay vines build its frame: the small clusters of Wente bring out notes of citrus blossoms, yellow apple, and a touch of gunpowder while enhancing the complex mineral and savory characters. The Calera selection contributes balance, with fresh aromas of pear, peach blossom, citrus, and vibrant acidity.
The wine is fermented and aged in 15% new oak, foudres, and concrete eggs, for 18 months with no stirring, until bottled unfined and unfiltered.
2020 gave birth to wines full of character and personality, emphasizing the strength and resilience of Hyde Vineyard. The growing season was defined by extreme drought conditions and intense heat, creating challenges for even growth and ripening. Yields were light but the resulting wines are of precision and concentration, accompanied by brighter natural acid and pronounced minerality. Despite the challenges 2020 presented in the vineyards as well as personal lives, HdV is proud of the wines they were able to create to commemorate Hyde de Villaine's 20th anniversary!
Winery notes: Aromas of Golden Delicious apple and honeysuckle are balanced by hints of nutmeg, saline and white pepper. Subtle herbal tones of lemon verbena lend to a “nervy” edge of this wine that cuts through the palate. Flavors of apricot and mango round out the brighter tones of lime and other bright citrus. The lean texture and a tension in the wine promises to reward those that are able to cellar.
