Founded in 1874, Speri is located in the heart of the Valpolicella region of Veneto. Run by the Speri family and now in its seventh generation, Alberto Speri is the winemaker. The Speri winery is heavily rooted in tradition and well respected in the region.
All Speri products are Certified Organic. Today the Speri Winery is the most important organic producer of the Valpolicella Classica area in terms of output and of hectares of vineyard.
Valpolicella Classico is a hilly nook within northern Italy’s Veneto region, covering one-fifth of the entire Valpolicella DOC and corresponding to just five municipalities. Wedged between the Adige River and the Alps mountain range, it constitutes the appellation’s historical core. Here the elevated terrain located on the Alpine foothills has a temperate climate that is unexpected given the northerly latitude.
In the Speri vineyards, the land has been divided into distinct crus comprising La Roverina, Sant’Urbano, and La Roggia. Throughout the property, the native vines of Corvina Veronese, Rondinella, Corvinone, Molinara and others are planted with a much higher density than the appellation’s average. This results in small crops with an excellent concentration that are fine-tuned in the state-of-the-art winery.
Manual selection of the finest bunches followed by drying for around 100 days, with a loss of about 40% in the weight of the grapes. These are destemmed and pressed and fermentation with maceration takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Aged for 24 months in 500 l. French oak tonneaux and 18 months in medium-to-large Slavonian oak casks. Maturation in bottle for 12 months.
Undisputedly symbolic of the Speri company, the Amarone Sant’Urbano is a superb example of a fine, classic wine. It is an extraordinary wine with great complexity and a vigorous structure, which has always been top for its elegance and quality.
Vinous #79 of Top 100, 2024
"A compelling bouquet of dusty dried violets, fresh coffee grounds, cocoa powder and dried black cherries makes the 2019 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Sant'Urbano impossible to ignore. This is wonderfully lifted and graceful in style, dense yet energetic with silken textures and polished red berry fruits that slowly saturate the palate. The 2019 youthfully folds in upon itself, leaving a bitter tinge of spice, dark chocolate and fine-grained tannins. The balance here is something to behold. The 2019 is full of potential—bury it deep." - 96 points, Vinous (#79 of Top 100 Wines of 2024)
