BACKGROUND

Vie di Romans, aka the 'Road of the Romans,' is one of the noteworthy wineries in Italy's northeastern Friuli region.

Although the estate has grown vines and produced wine for a hundred years, it was primarily an agricultural property until the late 20th century. It wasn't until 1978 that Gianfranco Gallo took over the estate, and the transformation began.

A visionary with broad experience and most-updated knowledge, he saw the land as an ideal site for vineyards and began to convert it to viticulture; he identified and planted the varieties most suitable for the location and climate, and he constructed a new winery. Gallo also introduced radical viticultural programs and devoted his attention to winemaking practices; these initiatives have given the stamp of high quality and distinctive personality to the wines of Vie di Romans over the last 20 years.

Vie de Romans is best known for its exceptional white wines made from international varieties—sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, chardonnay—and the local friulano grape. Wines with well-focused fruit, generous flavor, and complex texture. They are exciting, clean, and electrifying with aging potential.

TERROIR AND WINEMAKING

The 50 hectares of vineyards lie in the far eastern section of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, in the Isonzo river valley. Due to this location, the vineyards benefit from a niche microclimate where the temperature variations from the exposure to the Mediterranean climate of the Adriatic Sea (South) and the sub-Alpine climate of the Alps (North) build fruit ripeness and acidity, which are captured in the wines.

The alluvial soils are rich in minerals and include deposits of Dolomite rock and Carso limestone carried there by glaciers over the millennia and have been gradually building up over time.

With a distinctive soil and climate, Gianfranco Gallo vinifies the grapes from each vineyard separately to preserve each terroir's purest expression.
