Sara Sastre will be joining us for a Walkthrough Tasting at Vinonueva. Representing the second generation at Viña Sastre, she brings both youthful energy and a fresh outlook to the family estate. As the winery’s export manager, Sara serves as its public voice around the world, while her younger brother Raúl works alongside their father in the vineyards and cellar.

The Sastre family has been cultivating vines in Ribera del Duero for generations, their deep roots in the region giving them an unmatched understanding of its terroir.

We're particularly excited to taste with Sara, Viña Sastre ‘Pesus’ 2018, a very rare cuvée valued at $600, alongside two back vintages of  ‘Pago de Santa Cruz’ 2012 & 2015. Find the wine line up further down.

BACKGROUND

Viña Sastre is located in the province of Burgos, Ribera del Duero. The Sastre family’s connection to the vineyards of La Horra stretches back several generations. Their grandfather, Severiano, was among the founders of the local Asunción cooperative, while his son, Rafael, together with his own sons Pedro and Jesús, established the family winery in 1992.

At the time, their vision was simple: to vinify their own grapes separately, as they had long been selling them to friends and neighbors. What began as a small project rooted in 23 hectares of vines has grown into a benchmark estate known for wines that speak of place—wines of depth.

Today, Jesús Sastre leads the estate with the same conviction and devotion instilled by his family. After the passing of his brother Pedro in 2002, he took full responsibility for both the vineyards and winemaking. The family now farms 55 hectares of vines in Roa and La Horra, including 25 hectares of very old vines, some over 60 years old, that form the backbone of their most prized wines.

At altitudes between 800 and 840 meters, the family’s vineyards rest on gently sloping hills facing the Duero and Gromejón river valleys. These soils—rich in limestone and sand, naturally drained yet able to hold the right amount of moisture—help shape the estate’s distinctive style: concentrated and refined, powerful while maintaining freshness.

For the Sastre family, wine is not a product but a way of life. Jesús, having grown up among these old vines, sees the land as an extension of himself—a place that teaches patience, respect, and pursuit of excellence. His philosophy remains simple yet profound: great wines are born from great vineyards, shaped by nature, and guided by the gentle hand of experience.

True to their philosophy, the Sastre family farms without chemical fertilizers or pesticides and ferments with native yeasts from each parcel. Even stabilization follows nature’s rhythm, with the chill of La Horra’s winter nights clarifying the wines before they begin their quiet aging in barrel.

The result is a collection that embodies the essence of Ribera del Duero.
