We’re pleased to welcome José Moro to the shop for this Walkthrough Tasting. José is a key figure in Ribera del Duero, having spent decades working with Tempranillo and helping shape the region’s modern identity. With Cepa 21, he brings a more personal and focused approach, building on his family’s long history while exploring a style that emphasizes clarity, balance, and site expression.

BACKGROUND

Cepa 21 is the personal project of José Moro, rooted in a family tradition that spans more than a century in Ribera del Duero. While the Moro name is closely tied to the region, Cepa 21 represents a more contemporary expression—built on experience, but shaped with a forward-looking approach.

At its core is Tempranillo—locally known as Tinto Fino—that defines the wines' identity. The vineyards are planted at varying altitudes. This range allows for subtle differences in ripeness and structure, bringing both freshness and balance to the wine, depending on the site.

The conditions in Ribera del Duero—marked by significant day-night temperature swings and a long growing season—allow the grapes to ripen slowly. The long ripening period leads to concentrated fruit while maintaining freshness.

Founded in the early 2000s, Cepa 21 was conceived as a focused, vineyard-driven project. Underlying everything is a strong focus on the land. Farming decisions are made with long-term sustainability in mind, recognizing that the character of the wines begins in the vineyard and depends on preserving that environment over time.

The winery itself is built with a clean, functional design that incorporates modern tools to improve precision, without pushing the wines in a predetermined direction. The emphasis remains on letting each vineyard express itself clearly.
