BACKGROUND
In the vast landscape of Burgundy, where Grand Cru vineyards garner much of the attention, there are still hidden gems that deliver exceptional quality without generating buyers remorse. Grand Cru Burgundy represents around 2% of total production in the region, which leaves you with a sea of options to find wines that can rival those Grand Crus and give you a similar or better experience. Enter Domaine Pierre Thibert, a family-run estate located in Corgoloin, within the Côte de Nuits. This small but mighty domaine has been producing wines since 1989, with Pierre Thibert at the helm, later joined by his son Arthur and daughter Mathilde.
Arthur took over winemaking in 2017 and brought with him a fresh perspective while respecting the traditions established by his father. Since then, the domaine has invested in modernizing their facilities, adding new vinification vats and a state-of-the-art press, all while maintaining a focus on purity of fruit and terroir expression.
For Arthur, the key to great winemaking is all about the grapes. 'The priority for good winemaking is to have perfectly ripe grapes and very good health,' he shares. 'Then we must follow the fermentation very carefully to get the most out of our grapes.'
Their approach in the vineyards is organic, a method that Arthur believes is key to pushing quality levels upwards without compromising on the integrity of the fruit.
Despite the relatively low profile of Côte de Nuits Villages, Arthur sees potential for this appellation to gain greater recognition. 'Consumers of Côte de Nuits Villages are great wine lovers and are well aware of the great qualities of this appellation,' he notes.
When asked about the challenges of running a small, family-owned estate in Burgundy, Arthur points to the rising costs of equipment and the complexities of succession planning. Yet, despite these hurdles, the Thibert family remains committed to producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of Corgoloin, with an emphasis on balance, freshness, and aromatic complexity.
The 2022 vintage, according to Arthur, was nearly perfect, with ideal climatic conditions leading to wines of great balance and complexity. The 2023 vintage followed suit, though with slightly more generous yields, while 2024 proved to be one of the smallest harvests in the history of the domaine.
