Elena Penna (Vietti) - Vermouth di Torino Superiore Rosso NV

From the hills of the Langhe of Barolo, Elena Gin is a creation by Elena Penna Currado Vietti, founder of the internationally recognized Vietti Winery. She preserves a historical, local tradition dating back as far back as the Middle Ages, using only handpicked organic wild mountain plants. Elena Gin is a small batch (2,640 Bottles for the first production), artisanally crafter Classic London Dry Gin with an Italian character: the Langa style.

It boasts a typical juniper-lead flavor profile, with a touch of citrus and rooty/herbal finish. The small batches are produced using two wood-fired pot stills from the 18th century that were refurbished for this gin’s production. The botanicals are gently infused in the pot stills and the gin is lightly filtered using natural paper, which results in the product retaining a slight yellow hue from the botanicals and the wood-fired still. No synthetic flavorings, essential oils or colorants are used. Given its profile, Elena Gin presents as a perfect ingredient for many classic gin-based cocktails, from the quintessential martini, to the timeless negroni, to under-the-radar bartender favorites like the “hanky panky.”

As a Vermouth di Torino Superiore, the appellation regulations stipulate the use of at least 50% Piedmontese wines in the base wine and flavoring with herbs grown or harvested in the region. Given their experience and reputation for production of some of the most renowned wines from the region, it was only natural for Elena and Luca to utilize their skills and resources to continue their production at the highest possible quality.  Following suit after their inaugural release, LAZ19 is made from Barolo from the Lazzarito cru vineyard and Arneis, the sum of the parts ensuring an exceptional whole.

The production process is known as “one-shot”, because the botanicals and extracts are infused and macerated only once, to bring out maximum intensity and aromatic properties.
