Giovanni Rosso Ester Canale - Barolo 'Vigna Rionda' 2021

IN STOCK

Following the death of Tommasino Canale, Davide Rosso decided to replace a large part of the old vines that became by that time "exhausted" (about 0.80 hectares) preserving the part of the vineyard planted in 1946 (over 0.40 hectares). From these seventy years old plants, characterized by very low yields, we obtain our Barolo Vigna Rionda; only those roots so deep can tell the story of this vineyard.

Giovanni Rosso owns the iconic Vignarionda cru parcel no. 251P of map Foglio no. 8 of the commune of Serralunga d’Alba, which has been legendary for years, and is today considered the “Romanée-Conti of Barolo”. The name honors Ester Canale, granddaughter of Tommaso Canale, the first owner of Vigna Rionda cru (2 Ha), that he acquired back in 1934. In 2010 he passed away without a will and Vigna Rionda was split between six surviving relatives. Ester Canale, Davide Rosso’s mother, was one of them. The other producers decided to replant and get rid of the old vines, but Davide had a different, wonderful idea. He kept a small section of the original vines at the top of the Rionda hill and used it for massal selection of the new plantings and also to make a Barolo Vigna Rionda. Giovanni Rosso Ester Canale Barolo is therefore the only wine made from the original and most historical Vignarionda cru.

“Some wines are born of soil and sun, others of history and heart. When these precious 0.85 hectares returned to Ester Canale's family in 2011, it wasn't just land coming home but destiny fulfilled. From these hallowed slopes of Serralunga, blackberry and damson weave through waves of mixed spice incense and sweet baking notes in a mesmerizing symphony. The wine moves with such ethereal grace it nearly brings tears to the eyes. This profound beauty, from vines planted in 1946, doesn't just demand attention but commands silence, contemplation and ultimately surrender to its sublime elegance. A masterpiece that reminds us why Vignarionda stands among Barolo's greatest sites.” - 99 Points, Wine Enthusiast

“A wine that deserves time to unfold in the glass. Then it shows aromas of flowers, Parma violets, red cherries and wild strawberries. It’s full-bodied with fine-grained tannins, refreshing acidity and a cherry stone finish. Try from 2027.” - 95 Points, James Suckling
