As one of the oldest wine cooperatives in Alto Adige, Kellerei Kurtatsch looks back on a long tradition. The esteem for their unique terroir, craftsmanship and inestimably valuable experience in the vineyard are handed down from generation to generation. In this way, 190 families form a strong team which still remains family oriented and down-to-earth.
Outstanding wine is made in the vineyard. That’s why Kurtatsch considers their members – who do the vineyard work – to be the protagonists. For generations, they have cultivated a special connection to their vineyards, and know every single grapevine. This invaluable knowledge, paired with the small structure of the Cantina, offers the best prerequisites for the production of unique, characterful wines.
Thanks to the 190 small-structured family farms that cultivate 190 hectares of vineyards in a sustainable way, Kellerei Kurtatsch is able to select the best grape material for each individual location.
The Kerner grape is a cross between Schiava (Vernatsch) and Riesling. The south-east facing vineyards at 800 meters above sea level are ideal for the cool climate grape variety. Due to the high temperature difference between day and night, the grapes retain their firm acidity and develop intense fruit and flower aromas of yellow peach and lilac during the long ripening period. The Kerner Selection owes its pleasant minerality to the calcareous, gravelly-loamy dolomite soil. The firm acidity supports the minerality on the palate and ends in a long, juicy finish.
Temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel followed by ageing on the fine lees.
