Te Mata Estate - Coleraine 2021

IN STOCK

Te Mata Estate was originally part of Te Mata Station, a large pastoral land-holding established by English immigrant, John Chambers, in 1854. A homestead and stables were built on the property in the early 1870’s. After returning from France, John Chamber’s third son, Bernard, had the idea to plant vineyards on the north-facing hills around Havelock North. In 1892, Bernard Chambers planted vines on three parcels of hillside land above the homestead and began converting the original stables to ferment and mature these first Te Mata Estate wines. Today, Te Mata Estate still uses those same three vineyards.

Te Mata Estate has long remained in the hands of devoted families, and since 1974 has been owned and managed by the Buck family, who were drawn to the estate with a desire to produce Bordeaux and Northern Rhone inspired wines. Today, the 2nd generation of the family continues this pursuit, delivering internationally acclaimed, estate-grown wines of classical style, which represent the best qualities of their variety, vintage, and vineyard.

Coleraine derives its name from the Coleraine vineyard, home of John and Wendy Buck of Te Mata Estate. Coleraine is an assemblage of the finest wines produced from distinct plots within Te Mata Estate’s oldest Havelock Hills vineyards first planted in 1892. Aged 17 months in predominately new French oak barrels.

“Refined and understated, maintaining this Kiwi thoroughbred's royal reputation. It is a fragrant expression that brings sweetness of ripe, silky fruit without opulence or heaviness. Layers of complex flavor are infused through its concentrated yet satiny core, combining cassis, raspberry, violets, pencil lead, cedar and tea leaf. The finish is long, smoky and scented.” - 97 Points, Vinous
