Bideona was created to champion Rioja wines defined by the precise origins of their grapes. Working with 282 small vineyard parcels averaging just 0.3 hectares, the winery seeks to preserve Rioja Alavesa’s historic vineyards and their distinctive character. The vines average more than fifty years old, with many planted between 1920 and 1960—a valuable inheritance of local viticulture and genetic diversity.
Its Vinos de Paraje range highlights exceptional individual sites, bottled separately when a vintage expresses their character particularly well.
Lezagoia takes its name from the Basque expression meaning “the upper part of Leza.” It brings together four small parcels covering 1.21 hectares, planted in 1930, 1943, 1945, and 1950. Situated at approximately 600 meters elevation near the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, the vines grow in the limestone-clay soils characteristic of Rioja Alavesa.
The vineyard is predominantly Tempranillo, with diverse clonal material and a scattering of Bobal, Garnacha, and Viura. These are among Bideona’s latest-ripening sites, where pronounced differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures help preserve naturally high acidity.
Harvested on October 6, 2021, the grapes fermented in a small stainless steel tank with gentle manual pump-overs. The wine then aged for 458 days in 300- and 500-liter French oak barrels, a portion of them new. According to the producer, Lezagoia combines intense fruit concentration with firm structure, compact, elegant tannins, and freshness. Just 1,986 bottles were produced.
