Clos Mogador - Priorat Gratallops 2022

IN STOCK

Clos Mogador was founded by visionary and leader of the Priorat revolution René Barbier. This is a must try for any serious Spanish wine aficionado. Located in Gratallops, in the heart of the Priorat hills, Clos Mogador is an intensely concentrated wine from a blend 45% Garnacha, 29% Cariñena, 16% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. This distinctive blend balances the power and massive structure typical of Priorat with an elegance and finesse that belies its aging potential. While the Clos Mogador will continue to improve for 10 years or more, it can be drunk young.

40% Garnacha, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah and 20% Carignan. Ageing takes place in 500 liter new French oak casks for one year with racking by gravity every three months. The Syrah is aged in vat to maintain the lively fresh fruit flavors. After blending of the different grape varieties the wine spends the second winter in vat. No stainless steel is used here, only fibreglass and wooden vats. The doors of the cellar are kept open in winter to encourage the precipitation of tartrates. Unfined and unfiltered, the wine is bottled in the spring or autumn of the second year after the harvest.

“Their single-vineyard 2022 Clos Mogador, they flagship wine, was produced with a blend of grapes, mostly Garnacha and Cariñena but also some Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon (less and less, as they are regrafting most of them). It has a very Mediterranean nose with plenty of dry hay and straw notes, the classical wet slate notes, very Priorat too, and it has a round palate and very fine, chalky tannins. It's serious and harmonious and feels relaxed, without any excess. It comes in at 14% alcohol with 5.4 grams of acidity and a bone-dry finish. None of the 2022s showed excess heat or ripeness. The alcohol is contained and integrated, and the wines are balanced and harmonious but with a more Mediterranean profile.” - 97 Points, Wine Advocate

“A deep, soulful sort of wine. Graphite, dark earth and smoke contribute to the savoury characters here, though there's no shortage of ripe, dark fruits. Chalky, firm and gently floral. This will need some time to come out of its shell but the material is all there. Excellent!” - 96 Points, Tim Atkin

“The oak spices are still a bit prominent, but that doesn’t hinder its expression of complexity and impressive depth. Graphite, roasted spices and a panoply of dried herbs and sweet cherries. It is plump, almost full-bodied and layered, with firm, fine tannins and a lengthy finish. Drink from 2025.” - 95 Points, James Suckling
