Anne Gros comes from a winegrowing family whose roots in Vosne-Romanée date to 1830, when Alphonse Gros settled in the village. Successive generations developed the family’s vineyards and reputation, becoming early advocates of estate bottling in the late nineteenth century. As the holdings passed through the family, they eventually formed several independent domaines, each continuing its own branch of the Gros legacy.
The daughter of François Gros, Anne took responsibility for her father’s domaine in 1988, at just twenty-five. His health difficulties had forced the family to sell much of its production in barrel for approximately a decade. Anne rebuilt the estate’s identity, initially working under the name Anne et François Gros, before adopting Domaine Anne Gros in 1995.
Her arrival followed a change in direction: she left art studies in 1984 to train in viticulture and oenology in Beaune and Dijon. She subsequently expanded the domaine from approximately three to 6.5 hectares, establishing her own reputation through close attention to the vineyards and an independent approach to winegrowing. As a young woman assuming responsibility for a Burgundian estate, she also had to overcome doubts about her ability to lead it.
Family continuity remains central to the domaine. In 2019, Anne passed the estate to her three children—Julie, Paul, and Marine—while continuing to guide the transition and train the next generation. Their involvement carries forward a property whose modern identity owes much to Anne’s determination to restore, develop, and give her own name to the family inheritance.
"Note: from a .30 ha parcel; 2022 is the first vintage. This is also aromatically attractively airy, pretty and cool with its array of red cherry, raspberry, sandalwood and exotic tea scents. I very much like the seductive texture of the solidly powerful medium weight flavors that display better power and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finale. This could use better depth but more should reasonably develop over time." - 91-94 Points, Burghound
"The 2022 Grands-Echézeaux Grand Cru is the maiden vintage under the Anne Gros label, the parcel having previously been vinified by Bernard Gros (Gros Frère & Soeur) under a fermage. It has a very well-defined bouquet, dark berry fruit intermixed with crushed limestone and wilted rose petals, understated at first and only gradually gaining intensity. The medium-bodied palate has filigree tannins, tensile from the start, with a keen thread of acidity. It fans out wonderfully towards the finish with a saline aftertaste. Precision is the keyword here rather than power. Superb." - 94-96 Points, Vinous
"New at Anne Gros. A fine pink purple colour. The nose is elegance personified but with a suggestion of fruit depth behind. A gorgeous suavity of fruit, fine at the front of the palate and continuing through behind. Little red berries and a faint touch of liquorice. More refined than Bas des Beaumonts (see under Paul Tollot-Gros), less detail but more substance than Loachausses. Drink from 2032-2040." - 94-98 Points, Jasper Morris MW, Inside Burgundy
