Domaine de la Charbonniere has always been deeply familial, with the fourth generation of the Maret family now in charge; the eldest daughter, Veronique Maret, took over winemaking responsibilities in 2007 and she and her sister Caroline have run operations since 2014 (though the entire family, including their mother, Mireille, and father, Michel, can still be found working hard in every aspect of the winemaking process). The estate covers 18.5 hectares of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, 4 hectares of Vacqueyras (in Sarrians), 2 hectares of Cotes du Rhone, and 3 hectares of IGP.
Veronique’s most notable influences at Domaine de la Charbonniere have been to update and modernize the winery itself while also more adamantly employing organic winemaking practices. She brings new perspective and energy to a traditional estate that will surely find itself in the spotlight in vintages to come.
The plots are located in the town of Sarrians, in the localities "la Verde", "Pavane" on the Garrigues plateau. This 35-year-old vineyard takes root in sandy-clay soils. Blend is 60% Grenache/40% Syrah. Vinification of Grenache and Syrah together if the maturity of these grape varieties allows. The maceration lasts about 3 weeks, gentle extraction by various methods (pumping over, load shedding or trapping); Malolactic fermentation in wooden vats or in stainless steel vats, in barrels. Aging is made in wooden vats, in half-muids, in barrels.
"The Maret family is known for the top Châteauneuf du Pape, but they also make some brilliant Vacqueyras. Their 2020 Vacqueyras is a 60/40 split of Grenache and Syrah, and it has lots of darker fruits and peppery herb aromatics to go with a medium to full-bodied profile on the palate. This is a lively, elegant vintage for the Southern Rhône, and it shows in this wine’s elegance and freshness." - 91 points, Jeb Dunnuck
