Founded in 1859 by cooper Jean-Édouard Dupard, Domaine Jean Chartron has remained in the family for five generations. His daughter Eugénie brought the vineyards into the Chartron family through her marriage to Jean-Edmond Chartron. The family’s history is closely woven into that of the village: in 1873, while serving as mayor, Dupard helped secure the addition of “Montrachet” to Puligny’s name, honoring its most celebrated vineyard.
Today, siblings Jean-Michel and Anne-Laure Chartron oversee the estate’s 14.5 hectares across Puligny-Montrachet and neighboring villages. Jean-Michel handles winemaking, while Anne-Laure manages the vineyards. Their holdings include village, Premier Cru, and Grand Cru sites, with celebrated bottlings such as Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret, Clos de la Pucelle, and Chevalier-Montrachet Clos des Chevaliers.
Chardonnay is the heart of the domaine. The whites are fermented and matured in oak, with the proportion of new barrels tailored to each appellation and vintage, generally ranging from 10% to 30%. Careful vineyard work and measured use of oak support the family’s aim: to reveal the distinct character of each Burgundian site.
The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet combines fruit from Les Benoîtes with 25% young-vine Chardonnay from the Premier Cru Les Caillerets, bottled under the village appellation. That contribution adds depth to a wine described by critics as fresh, focused, and finely balanced. The domaine ferments and matures its whites in oak barrels, adjusting new oak and aging to each wine and vintage.
"Note: from a .55 ha holding that is mostly situated in Les Benoîtes, along with about 25% from young vines in the 1er Caillerets. A riper nose features aromas of rosemary oil, spice and various white orchard fruit scents. The supple and relatively forward medium-bodied flavors possess a highly seductive mid-palate texture that contrasts somewhat with the youthfully austere, lightly rustic and very dry finale where a touch of bitter lemon-character slowly emerges. This relatively powerful effort is also quite good, especially for a villages, and worth a look.*Burghound Outstanding!*" - 89-91 Points, Burghound
"The 2024 Chassagne-Montrachet Villages has a delineated bouquet with assiduous use of oak. Just the faintest reduction at play. The palate is fresh and crisp with citrus peel, orange pith and a little spice. Very pretty, very elegant with a nicely focused finish this punches above its weight." 89-91 Points, Vinous
