Domaine Jean-Louis Chave - Saint-Joseph Clos Florentin 2022

Wine growers in the northern Rhône since 1481, the Chave family (currently helmed by Gérard and son Jean-Louis) represents 16 generations of unbroken lineage committed to the production of some of the finest Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne on the planet. Jean Louis joined his father in 1992 after completing undergraduate studies at University of Connecticut and a degree in oenology at Davis. It was at that time that he completely replanted vineyards on the family’s original estate in Saint-Joseph, which had been abandoned in the early 1900’s when phylloxera hit the region.

The Clos Florentin is a historic vineyard first planted by monks in the 15th century. It has been harvested and bottled continuously since then. Chave acquired the property in 2009.

Natural yeasts. Fermented and matured entirely in stainless steel tanks. Bottled two years after harvest with no fining and no filtration.

"Coming form a warmer terroir just south if Mauves, the 2022 Saint Joseph Clos Florentin would be hard to identify as a Saint Joseph in a blind tasting given its incredible polish, elegance, and more perfumed, red fruit-driven profile. Don’t let that deter you, however, as it’s a singular, incredibly gorgeous wine. Black raspberries, redcurrant, loamy earth, flowery incense, and spice-driven notes define the aromatics, and its medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, layered mouthfeel and almost velvety tannins. It should have plenty of early accessibility, yet given its balance as well as its depth, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it have two decades or more of longevity." - 95 Points, Jeb Dunnuck
