Brut Grande Cuvée Edition 171ème is a blend of 131 wines from 12 different years, the youngest of which is from 2015, while the oldest dates back to 2000. Its final composition is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier. A stay of around seven years in Krug’s cellars gives Krug Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition its distinct expression and elegance.
Sylvain Pataille is one of the new breed of winemakers. A highly-regarded consulting oenologist, who still advises over 15 Burgundy domaines, Pataille has in very short order built up a domaine of some 15 hectares, all in Marsannay, the northernmost, and most recent (1987) AOC of the Côte de Nuits.
Sylvain has been organically certified since 2008, and has been employing biodynamics in the vineyards and cellar for over a decade.
Sylvain has at least two parcels on opposite ends of the vineyard. The vines here are old, the youngest being planted in 1949, and consist of Chardonnay, Aligoté, and Pinot Noir for Rosé. Sylvain notes the characteristic reductive minerality despite the change in location, grape, and bedrock. He believes this minerality is so beautiful that it would be a shame to make red wine on this terroir.
Vine Age: Planted in 1932 (En Blungey), 1934 (Champforeys), and 1949 (Charme Aux Prêtres). Vinification: 40-50% directly pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation. Aged for 24 months in demi-muids (1/3 new oak) and tank.
