Emidio Pepe is a singular producer creating amazingly complex age-worthy reds and whites in a region of mass production, overly engineered versions of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.
The winemaking regime at Pepe follows an uber-natural and artisinal path. Grapes are grown biodynamically, hand-harvested, hand-destemmed, fermented with spontaneous yeast and aged 18-24 months in glass-lined cement tanks. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered and are aged in their cellar in bottles for continued development
The color is a deep ruby red. In the nose hints of ripe red fruit with herbaceous touch. In the mouth important mineral, good tannic structure and full body with taste of red fruit like cherry. Wine 100% organic. Perfect with second courses such wild boar and lamb.
"The 2014 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne totally captivates with an exotic mix of musky red currants, allspice, dusty rose and a touch of forest floor that I find wildly attractive. It’s soft and enveloping on the palate, without a hard edge in sight, casting citrus-tinged berries across a core of brisk acids. Savory herbal tones come forward toward the close. This finishes structured and long, yet the tannins are sweet. The mouth is left watering for more as a mineral tinge and wild strawberry hints slowly taper off. The cool and rainy vintage helped produce a unique expression of Emidio Pepe Montepulciano, but one that is overdelivering at the moment." - 94 points, Antonio Galloni Vinous
