The remote, historic Hyland Vineyard is nestled in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range in the McMinnville AVA. Pioneering wine legends, Dick Erath and Charles Coury undertook the colossal first plantings in 1971 with cool-climate, Alsatian varieties. A few years of careful tending resulted in 45 acres of own-rooted Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewürztraminer. Today, Hyland Vineyard is one of the Willamette Valley's oldest and largest vineyards, spanning 185 planted acres on volcanic Jory soil at elevations that range between at 650'-900'. Hyland Estates winery produces a boutique selection of wines crafted exclusively from Hyland Vineyard, from the best of these iconic vines. Additionally, this vineyard continues to be the source of fruit for many top scoring wines from some of Oregon's most recognized producers.
Hand-harvested, hand-sorted, 90% destemmed with 10% whole cluster inclusion. Ferment occurs in small stainless vessels using a variety of native and cultured yeast. Gentle pumpovers facilitate slow, deliberate extractions throughout fermentation. The wine has 18-20 days of skin contact. It is aged 10 months in 25% new French oak before bottling.
Tasting Notes: ”The wine’s red cherry and sage aromas are joined by a wisp of pulled pork. Flavors like ripe Bing cherries and black tea seem to pop, thanks to zippy acidity and a taut, crisp texture. The Coury Clone spent nine months in French oak, 25% new.” — Michael Alberty
"Juicy and savory pinot with a medium body and fine tannins. Focused and racy, with notes of dark cherries, raspberries, spices and hints of chocolate. Tense and vibrant with attractive zesty notes at the end. I like the freshness here. Drink or hold." - 92 Points, James Suckling
