With its origins rooted in WWII, this family estate is now in its third generation of winemakers. The domaine’s founder, François Gerbet, was one of the liberators of Vosne-Romanee near the end of the war. He met Suzette Sirugue (born Bissey) who herself hailed from a family of winegrowers spanning several generations. Together, they formed the estate in 1946.
In 2004, Marie-Odile Archambaud Gerbet, one of François’s daughters, formed the J & J Archambaud company with her husband. They named the estate after their sons Jean-Philippe and Jean-Christophe. The sons now own and operate the estate, with its vineyards spanning over 5 hectares and including many vines planted as far back as the 1930s and 1940s.
To foster sustainability while seeking the best expression of their terroir, efforts to convert to organic farming began in 2013. The first vintage to be certified was in 2019; now all vineyards have reached full organic certification by ECOCERT. Additionally, the brothers have been practicing biodynamic principles and are working toward Demter certification in the coming years. Their vinification method is adapted to each vintage and each plot of land or climat. Typically, however, the brothers vinify with 5 to 25% whole cluster and allow the wine to age between 14 to 18 months, with between 10% to 25% done in new oak barrels.
For this Vosne-Romanée plots are spread over several locations of the appellation: “Aux Réas”, the vineyard was planted between 1947 and 1948, “Aux Communes”, the vineyard was planted between 1939 and 1940. “Au Dessus de la Rivière” the vineyard was planted in the 1940s, partially replanted between 1998 and 2000. “Les Chalandins”, the vineyard was planted in 1964, the southern quarter was replanted in 1983.
“Not often that you introduce a new Burgundy producer located in Vosne-Romanée, but here you are. “JJ” refers to brothers Jean-Christophe and Jean-Philippe Archambaud. I met the former at the tiny tasting room on a break from his day job running Château de Santenay." - Neal Martin, Vinous
“The Domaine was started by my grandfather, François Gerbet, who was born in the Pyrenees. During the Second World War, he was a soldier liberating France, and his tank literally stopped in the square outside, close to the mayor’s office. He met my grandmother, who was descended from the Bissey and Sirugue families, and they fell in love. After the war ended, he moved to Vosne-Romanée and lived in this very house. He started his own Domaine in 1946 and planted vines, about 15.5 hectares, with around 10-hectares in the Hautes Côtes, the rest in Vosne. He retired in the 1990s. In 2013, the holdings were split. [Readers may well recognize the name “Gerbet.” In fact, Amélie Berthaut at Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet is his cousin, and some of their vineyards like Petits-Mont lie next to each other.] We practice organic farming of our 5.36-hectares, including the Hautes Côtes. We sometimes use whole bunch, and we use four different cooperages in the vinification.” - Neal Martin, Vinous
