PerSe - 'Volare del Camino' 2022

David Bonomi, Edgrado del Popolo, and his son Santiago founded Per Se Wines in 2012 with the intention of making pure mountain wines. They planted vines on land they farm in conjunction with the Monks of the Monasterio del Cristo Orante. The Monasterio zone of Gualtallary is located in the northwest corner of Mendoza’s Uco Valley at approximately 1500 meters elevation. The soils are comprised of intense white chalk and decomposed granite and their climate is one of the coolest wine growing regions in Argentina.  The land is farmed organically (not certified) and each plot has particularly unique qualities. All vines are head trained and most are planted at less than 0.5 hectares per parcel, at different densities, from 2,300 – 7,300 plants per hectare. The PerSe wines are made in tiny amounts with the smallest wine coming from just 312 vines.  They vinify with native yeasts and minimal intervention in the winery and the vineyard.

100% Malbec, sourced from 16 rows in the western sector of the block, the site boasts shallower soils with a higher content of calcareous gravel. Named after the bridge that separates the classic vineyard and the vineyard on the hill. Natural fermentation at low temperatures of all de-stemmed fruit with very gentle daily manual punch-downs, with a 30-day maceration. Aged for 14-months in neutral French oak barrels.

"Sourced from 16 vine rows planted in the Monasterio area of Gualtallary, the 2022 Malbec Volare spent up to 14 months in oak barrels. Deep purple in hue, it reveals floral aromas alongside notes of grapefruit, cherry and sour cherry. There’s a hint of sage and intense fruit like elderberry. Delicate, with chalky tension and juiciness, the palate offers concentrated yet vibrant fruit, finishing with a subtle tea note. This is an astonishing, nuanced wine with a textured palate that reflects its high-elevation origins." - 95 points, Vinous

"The 2022 Volare del Camino opens on an initially introverted note, slowly revealing a red bouquet accented with turned earth, chalk dust and dried herbal notes rendered with grace and understatement. The palate showcases the refinement and lacy texture that characterizes this single parcel, concluding with an extremely fine-grained finish that continues to swell with further aeration. While I found this a touch more closed down than the other Per Se 2022s, it is far from lacking and could merit a higher score with a bit more time in bottle." - 95+ points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
