Domaine Pierre Vessigaud, located in the village of Solutré-Pouilly within the heart of the prestigious Pouilly-Fuissé appellation in the Mâconnais, Burgundy, has been a family-run estate for five generations. Pierre Vessigaud took over the estate in 1988, continuing the tradition while adopting organic practices. The estate covers 10 hectares of vineyards, including 5 hectares of Pouilly-Fuissé, 3 hectares of Mâcon-Fuissé, and 1 hectare each in Mâcon-Charnay and the Beaujolais appellation of Saint-Amour.
Since 1998, Domaine Vessigaud has adhered to organic farming practices, avoiding synthetic herbicides and pesticides to respect the soil and the environment. This commitment earned the estate organic certification, demonstrating their dedication to preserving the terroir and maintaining natural vineyard management. Pierre emphasizes that “great wines come from great soils,” and his focus on ecological techniques has allowed him to produce wines that express the unique qualities of the region.
The grapes at Domaine Vessigaud are harvested by hand, carefully sorted, and pressed for five hours. The juice is fermented with natural yeasts in a variety of vessels, including 3 to 15-year-old barrels, large wooden vats (foudres), and cement vats. The wines then undergo maturation for 11 to 18 months, depending on the cuvée, ensuring the wines develop complexity and balance.
