Prà Amarone - Della Valpolicella Morandina 2017

Graziano Prà’s roots lie in the family vineyards tended by his father and grandfather in Soave. After training as an oenologist, he established the modern winery with his brother Sergio in the 1980s, producing the first Soave Otto in 1983 and introducing the vineyard selection Monte Grande in 1988. Graziano became sole owner in 2007, continuing a philosophy centered on native grapes, careful farming, and wines that express their origins with freshness and elegance.

In 2001, Graziano expanded into Valpolicella with the purchase of La Morandina, farming its vineyards organically from the beginning. These cool, elevated sites offered a distinctive setting for red wines, with limestone-rich soils and air currents from the Lessini Mountains. His first Amarone followed with the 2006 vintage, bringing the same emphasis on clarity and balance to one of Veneto’s most powerful wine styles.

Made from Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and Oseleta, Prà’s Amarone comes from organically managed vineyards in Mezzane and Tregnago, planted in 2001 at approximately 450 meters elevation. Southeastern exposure and calcareous soils help shape a wine that combines concentration with freshness.

Selected grapes are dried on trays for two months before destemming, crushing, and fermentation in stainless steel. Aging comprises two years in tonneaux and barriques, followed by one year in large Allier oak casks and another year in bottle before release.

The producer describes cherry and plum flavors layered with bitter cocoa and licorice, supported by smooth texture, tannin, and balancing acidity. Graziano’s aim is an Amarone made for the table—particularly alongside braised meats, game, and mature cheeses.

"A burly wine of considerable concentration. A twine of green pepper, stalky fennel and Alpine amaro, with some barrique cedar edges. Yet the mid-palate lacks the gusto necessary to mitigate and ameliorate the herbal patina. Made on a drier side, with the pursuit of freshness evident. This may turn a corner. Drink or hold." - 92 Points, James Suckling
