Susana Balbo Signature White Blend is a harmonious combination of Semillon, Torrontés, and Sauvignon Blanc. The proportions vary with each vintage, determined by Susana and her team during the crucial blending process. With over 40 years of experience, Susana continues to find the art of master blending a yearly challenge.
The grapes are sourced from Paraje Altamira in Valle de Uco, where the altitude of 1,150 meters above sea level, low annual rainfall (350 mm), significant temperature variation, and sandy-loam soils enriched with calcium carbonate and colluvial stones create wines of remarkable minerality and refreshing acidity. The Torrontés comes from the best clones of Cafayate, Salta—brought back to Mendoza by Susana and planted in Valle de Uco.
This White Blend was born from a conversation between Susana and Tim Atkin, Master of Wine and one of Europe’s most influential wine journalists. Known as the “Queen of Torrontés”, Susana not only mastered this unique Argentine grape but also revolutionized its potential, moving beyond its traditional use in generic white wines to create a fresh and elegant style.
During a tasting session, Tim Atkin identified Argentina’s potential for producing high-end white blends. Inspired by his insight, Susana took on the challenge, proving that Argentina is not just about Malbec—it also has the ability to produce world-class white wines. In Tim’s words, “Susana gets things done,” and before long, the award-winning Susana Balbo Signature White Blend was born.
This sophisticated blend combines Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc with a unique Torrontés twist—a grape Susana considers essential for a high-end Argentine white. The winemaking process for Torrontés differs from the others: it does not undergo maceration during pressing, and after fermentation, it remains on the lees for two months to enhance mouthfeel and texture.
As Susana Balbo leads Argentina’s white wine revolution, the Susana Balbo Signature White Blend plays a pivotal role in redefining what Argentine white wines can achieve.
The wine critic Tim Akin described it as: “A pioneering, mould-breaking white blend that seems to get better with every vintage”.
Exotic and aromatic nose of tropical fruits, grapefruit and white pepper notes. The mouth is round and creamy with notes of apricot and pineapple mingling with herbal pyrazines from the Sauvignon Blanc which imparts a green twist to the finish. A well made white wine of great balance with classic Torrontés and Sauvignon Blanc profiles clearly showing themselves. Very bright, fresh acidity leaves a long finish.
