Villa Sparina’s modern history began in the 1970s, when Mario and Bruna Moccagatta purchased an eighteenth-century estate in Monterotondo, in the heart of Gavi. Recognizing the potential of its hillside vineyards, they established a family winery devoted largely to Cortese, the white grape behind Gavi. Today, their children Stefano, Tiziana, and Massimo carry on the family business.
The property encompasses approximately 100 hectares, including around 70 hectares of vineyards, planted predominantly to Cortese and Barbera. Clay-rich soils and cooling breezes from the nearby Ligurian coast shape the growing conditions. Alongside its signature Gavi del Comune di Gavi, the estate produces Monterotondo, a separately vinified selection from a historic vineyard planted in 1945, demonstrating Cortese’s capacity for depth, complexity, and aging.
Villa Sparina’s distinctive curved bottle also connects the estate’s past and present: designer Giacomo Bersanetti drew inspiration from an old vessel discovered during excavations on the property. The family extended its vision of wine and hospitality in 2004, opening L’Ostelliere hotel and La Gallina restaurant within the historic estate.
"Mediterranean sun-dried lemons and pressed flowers meeting mineral-rich stones with salt crystals. The textural depth shows up ready to impress, each sip building momentum like waves on shore. This is Gavi proving it can hang with the big guns of white wine. Time to clear cellar space. Drink Now - 2040" - 94 Points, Wine Enthusiast
