BACKGROUND
Château Lascombes, a distinguished Second Growth estate in the heart of the Margaux appellation, boasts a history that stretches back to the 16th century. One of the largest estates in Bordeaux, spanning 297 acres,
spread around three of the five villages of the appellation, offering an unmatched diversity of different soils and terroirs. The vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. Perched on one of the Médoc's highest hilltops at 65 feet, Lascombes enjoys a unique position that enhances the character of its wines. The poor, nutrient-deficient soils force the vines to develop deep roots to find the nutrients and minerals they need to grow, resulting in grapes of unique concentration.
Over the centuries, it has passed through the hands of notable families and investors. Château Lascombes, named after its 17th-century owner, Antoine, Chevalier de Lascombes, has a history shaped by influential proprietors. Originally inherited from the Durfort de Duras family, the estate underwent a major transformation in the mid-20th century when it was acquired by a group of investors led by the visionary Alexis Lichine. Under Lichine's leadership, the estate underwent a major transformation. Subsequent owners, including Bass Charrington, which also owned Château Latour in Pauillac, and the American group Colony Capital, made significant investments and expansions, further elevating the estate's standing.
Today, Château Lascombes is making waves in the wine world with its newest chapter. In 2022, the Lawrence family, also owners of Napa Valley's Heitz Cellars, purchased Château Lascombes. Which marked a change of direction, first and foremost, it represented a return to family.
Their first move? Appointing Axel Heinz, the famed 'Maestro of Merlot,' as CEO and Managing Director. Heinz, formerly of Ornellaia and Masseto in Tuscany, has brought his renowned 18 years of expertise and vision to Château Lascombes. With a focus on tradition and balance, he's redefined the estate's style, emphasizing classic Bordeaux character with a Cabernet Sauvignon-driven approach grown on gravelly soil.
